Info For Vendors

Thank you for your interest in The Natural Resource! Ohio is a state that abounds in outdoor recreational opportunities. At TNR, we are intensely aware of the important role that the outdoor business community plays in making those opportunities available to outdoor enthusiasts. We are committed to building awareness among sportsmen and -women about all of Ohio's great outdoor resources. In order to do that most effectively, we need YOU to become a member of The Natural Resource!

However, we realize that before taking that step there are several questions you probably need answered about TNR, such as:

 How does TNR work?

TNR is a tool that helps outdoor enthusiasts to locate the resources they need to plan and prepare for an enjoyable outdoor experience. These resources could include a public boat launch on a lake, a trailhead for a mountain bike trip, or the location of a business that serves the outdoor community - a business like yours! In this sense, TNR is similar to a phone book that's dedicated just to the outdoors.

However, TNR does much more than simply provide a street address and telephone number like a traditional telephone directory would. TNR actually identifies the exact physical location of the resource on a map of the state of Ohio. Each resource is identified with a colored marker (or "icon") on the map. What's more, not just one or two select resources that might be important to an outdoor enthusiast are included on the map, every resource is there!

This is profoundly important, because now a fisherman who is traveling to the southeastern part of the state from up north can easily answer the question, "Where can I go to pick up some live bait before I hit the water?" just by looking at a TNR map. Or a boater who is interested in enjoying a day on the shores of Lake Erie can find a marina where he can launch his boat, fill up with gas, and maybe even buy a quick lunch before heading out. Heck, with TNR he can even use satellite images to zoom in on the marina and see what the boat ramp and parking arrangements look like.

All of this information in one place means a better outdoor experience for TNR users - and more business for vendors who are TNR members.

Now, with over 5,000 resources on the site that might be of interest to an outdoorsman (and growing!), it's not practical to place an icon for every resource on just one map. That why TNR organizes maps conveniently by category or subject area.

There are six main categories representing the primary activities covered by the site (fishing, hunting, camping, boating, biking, and golf), and lots of subcategories that help to further organize those six broad subject areas. For example, the fishing category includes maps that show resources like license vendors, live bait and tackle shops, fly fishing outfitters, tackle manufacturers, and so on. In all, The Natural Resource currently includes about 40 maps. In time that number will grow to more than 70!

But you may be wondering, what happens if I operate a business that provides goods or services in a lot of different categories?

No problem! TNR can place an icon for your business on each map that's appropriate to describe the goods and services that you provide. If you sell fishing licenses, offer live bait, and rent canoes or kayaks, you should appear on three different maps. If you're a wildlife artist or a taxidermist, maybe you only need to be represented on a single map. Whatever your needs, TNR can make sure your business is a resource that the outdoor community can easily find.

 What is a TNR membership?

The Natural Resource is committed to being a comprehensive source of information for Ohio's outdoor lovers. There are currently over 5,000 resources included on the site on the day it launches. And that number is expected to swell as word about the site continues to grow. In fact, a business doesn't need to do anything to at least be included on the TNR site. Basic information (resource name and physical location) will be provided for every resource, free of charge. Just let us know if your business needs to be added!

But participating TNR "members" have the opportunity to share much more information about themselves with the customers they serve. A unique "profile" can be created for each participating member that will allow TNR users to see such things as:
  • the resource’s physical street address and phone number,
  • a photo or company logo provided by the vendor,
  • an email address,
  • a link to a member’s independent web site,
  • an interactive map inset that focuses on the member itself,
  • driving directions to or from the business - and much, much more...
In short, TNR members get their own online presence right on The Natural Resource site!

Why should I become a TNR member?

The Natural Resource is a powerful tool, not only for users of the site, but also for you - Ohio's outdoor vendors.

Through TNR, you have the opportunity to promote your business directly to an audience that has identified itself as being interested in the outdoors, and in the goods and services you have to offer. That's why they're coming to the site - they want to explore Ohio's outdoor resources. How often do you get a captive audience like that? It's like fishing in a barrel!

Becoming a member of The Natural Resource is an opportunity to help your business grow! It's a chance for your business to be noticed, whether you're a small owner-operated company or a big box retailer. You're much more apt to draw in new customers if you can clearly communicate to them what you have to offer. The best way to do that is by being a TNR member.

 What TNR memberships are available?

The Natural Resource has a membership option that's right for everyone. If your communication needs are simple, maybe a basic membership package will do. If you want to funnel users to your own web site, an upgraded option may be appropriate. Maybe you have a wider array of information to share. We have membership packages to meet more advanced needs as well.

In time there will be four membership options to choose from, from simplest to most advanced. TNR is pleased to announce that both Bronze and Silver Memberships are now available! To learn more about the specific vendor information provided at these levels, check out the sample vendor membership profiles.
Bronze: An entry level membership that includes a profile with the business name, county, street address, city, state, zip, phone number, and email link, as well as a photo/caption or logo unique to the business - all accompanied by a 600 character About Us description.

Silver: Similar to the bronze membership, but geared toward vendors who have their own company web site; includes a profile with all of the same information as a bronze membership, but also includes a link to an independent web site (if one exists) and an interactive, printable map inset specific to the vendor location (with zoom capability and a customized Get Directions feature) - all accompanied by a 1,200 character About Us description.

Gold: This future offering is an advanced membership that includes all of the features of a silver membership but also allows the vendor to share significantly more information with potential customer, such as hour of operation, a summary of goods and services offered, etc.

Platinum: This future offering will eventually become our top of the line membership! All of the features of a gold membership, plus a whole lot more. Maybe you could use a photo gallery, a coupon page, or other value added components. A platinum membership is like having a mini web site right on the TNR site (without all the headaches and hassles of creating one yourself)!
With several options to choose from, one of these membership options is surely right for your business!

What advantages does TNR have over conventional alternatives?

The Natural Resource is more than just a directory, like the print or online versions of traditional yellow pages. It's also more than just a collection of maps like a standard road atlas. By combining these two resources together, a powerful synergy is created that makes TNR a unique and invaluable tool.

But as an electronic medium, TNR provides numerous additional advantages to members as well:
  • Unlike printed directories that are produced annually, a member profile on TNR is easy to change, and can be updated at any time throughout the year.
  • Member profiles can serve to provide an online presence in the case when none exists, or can help direct users to sometimes hard-to-find vendor web sites in order to maximize an investment in a web site that has already been created.
  • Listings identify all businesses state-wide at no additional charge, so new customers can be drawn into your store not only from down the street, but down the interstate or from outside Ohio.
  • Perhaps best of all, TNR can connect you with outdoor enthusiasts at a fraction of the cost of conventional alternatives.
What's more, when TNR promotes its site to outdoor enthusiasts, it will in effect be advertising for all of its members. That means The Natural Resource can attract potential customers for its members much more cost effectively than any one business could by trying to reach these customers on its own. That's the power of being a member of a large outdoor community.

How much does a TNR membership cost?

A membership at The Natural Resource represents a very modest expense when compared to a similar listing through a conventional directory or newspaper advertisement. Bronze Memberships begin at $360 per year, and base Silver Memberships (where the profile is accessible through one map) is offered for a $720 annual membership fee. Similar offerings from online directories such as Verizon™ or Dex™ can cost up to ten times more than a TNR membership. A one-time ad in a regional newspaper or magazine can cost as much or more than an entire year with TNR. And these alternatives offer much, much less in return!

Prices vary by membership level (Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum) and by the number of maps upon which a vendor is identified. With several options to consider, finding a high quality solution that's within your budget is easy to do.
